Good database design is the foundation of any computer system. This applies both when a formal database package, such as Oracle or MS Access is used and also when a system just uses a collection of ISAM (indexed) files.

Regardless of how the data is stored, correct rules for defining and relating data bring various benefits including:

Better understanding of data.
Ease in querying data.
Reduction of duplicate data.

Reduced maintenance.

Less reliance on technical support.
Reduced risk of error.
Simplified import and export of data.
Widely understood methodology.

The design process obviously involves a stage of consultation. This is not a particularly technical process. It is usually done in liaison with the end-user of whom no in-depth computing knowledge is required.
